Management remarks
Call period: 2026 Q3 · 2026-10-21
Guidance: Brad Stewart: Over time, we expect our Logistics business to benefit from share gains as shippers become more selective, and as brokers with less robust safety or compliance infrastructure are pressured by increased costs from compliance, insurance, and third-party capacity.
Demand and orders: Adam Miller: The Truckload freight market continues to remain tight, and while broad measures of industry demand have been largely stable, demand for our capacity has been strong.
Margins: Brad Stewart: This margin recovery was partly driven by our progress in resetting contractual pricing to align with the tighter market conditions, as well as the seasonal easing in spot market capacity costs during the quarter, yielding the first year-over-year improvement in gross margin percentage in 4 quarters.
Analyst Q&A
Analyst Tom Wadewitz asked: I guess the backdrop is it's been really tough for a big trucker like you to grow organically with the fleet count over time. You used to do that in a really big way, but that's been tough for a while. Do you think there's, can you actually grow, let's say, over the road fleet count and driver count in 2027, or is there a kind of a path to that? Management Adam Miller answered: We've seen some good demand there and some growth in our owner/operator count the last 9 months. We're encouraged with that and are going to continue to invest in that area. I've told our team that over the next 12 months, we'd be somewhat disappointed if all of our growth has come from just rate. We want the growth to come from running more miles with our existing trucks, growing into open trucks that we have, and then ultimately growing our truck count.
